Georgia Unemployment Maximum

The following article provides information on Georgia unemployment maximums as they pertain to the additional extension of emergency unemployment compensation benefits.  In November 2008, laws were signed by the President which expanded the Emergency Unemployment Compensation program.  The new law allows individuals who are currently claiming benefits from their original extensions on Georgia unemployment maximums may potentially be able to receive first tier EUC benefits; i.e., a maximum of 7 additional weeks of such benefits.  They may also receive second tier EUC benefits for a maximum of 13 extra weeks of benefits once previous EUC benefits have expired and a new claim for Georgia unemployment benefits cannot be made.

All claimants who filed an initial claim for the Georgia unemployment maximum before the new law was enacted will be subject to recalculation of claims and granted a first tier EUC Monetary Redetermination.  This new determination will equate to 80% of the claimant’s original maximum benefit total, up to only 20 weeks.  These original Georgia unemployment maximums may well be reduced by the total sum of EUC payments made previously.  Claimants will be given weekly total benefits equal to those of their most recent unemployment application.  The very first payable week of first tier EUC was November 23-29, 2008.  The policy has continued from then on.

All those claimants who meet the exact requirements of the new Emergency Unemployment Compensation program laws, as they pertain to Georgia unemployment maximum, will be notified in the mail within 10 days after their claim has been made.  They will be given instructions about how to apply and claim the extra available first tier EUC benefits.  Claimants are not required to physically visit their local career center at that time, although they may be requested to do so later by career center staff.
